Actually, it would be useful to associate models with the
code that drives their specialized animation. This is not a
new idea in the high-end world (I have been using such
systems at work for close to 10 years now), but the
lower-end world still seems to want fancy functionality to
be generalized (viz the latest "Escher" by VIDI, or the many
generic animation tools for LW or 3DS, e.g. Sparks).
For high-powered models (say, a fully-emotive character), we
may want a lot of high-end control -- and that control will
probably be very specific to the model. For LW4, we can
imagine that the model is composed not only of its LWOB, but
of a collection of plugins (all in a single plugin file,
fortunately). Such a plugin file would define plugins
specific to the interaction between animation controls,
special deformations, "real" physical constraints, etc.
The great challenge here is: how hard is it to create
model-specific animation controls and assists? And how many
people will use them if it's hard to do? It's easy to
imagine an Amblin or similar large organization expending
the trouble for a character that they might use a lot, but
hard to envision a small house doing it (unless the market
changes to demand it...) for a low-budget 0:30.
It's easy to envision a meta-modeler tool that would generate
plugins directly -- but how many could be sold?
